Abstract

Based on the research made, the author proposes to use cognitive-pragmatic mechanism to construct implicit meanings having the purpose to interpret chosen blend characters in adequate manner. Using the method of conceptual integration to make blends in story “Cloud, Castle, Lake” by V.V. Nabokov helped to determine communicative author personification. The work stresses that blend is not defined directly out of all parts of the basic space, but the result of transformation of the basic elements with consideration of mental structures, which appear in the process of story reading. Creation process of mental patterns is demonstrated, that helps to follow the transformation of images being “behind the words” in order to describe the reality. Such cognitive recipient abilities as memory, perception and inner representation of the knowledge help to construct blends in Nabokov V.V. discourse: “man – Russian – Ioann man”, “man – Jesus” and “man – Satan – doll”.

Abstract

Historical novels are not only the legitimate progeny of a nation’s becoming conscious of its own identity, they also contribute to fortify that nationalist discourse. In a sense, the very beginning of the historical novel is entwined with the emergence of a widespread consciousness about the idea of nation(-hood); nevertheless, studies of the historical novel (and its relation and contribution to national identity) have remained under-investigated. The abiding aim of the present study is thus to examine this relationship, to draw ?attention to historical and cultural dimensions of Englishness. The present paper examines the influence of national ideology on fictional historiography, and focuses on the ways some English novelists, during the Victorian era, have reflected upon their Englishness.

Keywords: Englishness, nation, history, historical novel, Victorian era.

Abstract

The article analyzes different types of space-time organization patterns in the Stream of Consciousness texts (SCT) to determine communicative equivalence in translation. The study focuses on two novels by J. Joyce – Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, and their German and Russian translations. The conclusion can be made that there are two types of patterns realizing stream of consciousness technique in J. Joyce’s works: SCT with space-time hyperlinearity and SCT with chaotic-cyclic dominant, which can be conveyed in a communicatively equivalent way in target languages (TLs) with the reference to different translation strategies. Literal hyperlinear equivalents prevail in translation of first type SCT (equivalents or transcribed source language (SL) lexemes), while the translation of second type SCT features hermeneutic reflection of a translator actualized in the search of the most adequate way of form generation which conveys multidimensional sense of the author’s intentions to maximum extent.

Abstract

The article focuses on the technical terms of the category Locus and sets of adjacent technical terms in fragments of the terminological network. The examples are drawn from the field of space research that encompasses concepts of space science (astronomy, astrophysics, aerospace engineering) and exploration. We argue that the technical terms of the category Locus have the potential to establish semantic relations of certain types with the technical terms of certain categories only, thus forming prototypic semantic schemes that reflect academic concepts organization. As we differentiate the adjacent technical terms extracted from definitions from those found in specialized texts only, we analyze the categories they belong to and the types of semantic relations between them. We also discuss the types of semantic relations that turned to be frequent and productive for the technical terms of the considered category Locus, as well as non-productive ones.

Abstract

The article deals with the poetic nature of binary opposition in the mythology of literature. The structural method played an important role in revealing the nature of binary opposition in the structure of myth. The introduction of the article includes the theoretical significance of this method and the fact that the oppositional character of mythical worldview was the basis of dialectical development. The mythological motives and personages characterize the development of life, forming an opposition pair. The examples on the fact that oppositional pairs of mythical motives and characters constitute binary-dyadic integrity by complementing each other are represented. The controversial double forms of the dyad in mythical knowledge towards the paired phenomena and concepts is analyzed with mythical narration and concluded on the basis of scientists-mythologists’ conclusions. The nature of phenomena and concepts between the dyad Chaos-Space and the opposition life-death are regarded in literary aspect and in the framework of the cultural-historical analysis. The idea about the important role of the mythical “binary-dyadic” structure in presenting the conflictive nature of a man in the world and national literature has been formulated. Interpretation of mythological thinking in poetics is given through motive, struggle and artistic images. Interpretation of binary opposition in poetic knowledge in the structure of myth is analyzed with references to some literary works.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to observe the domain of Biomusicology, sub-branches, its methods, theories and approaches. Thus, this article also tries to understand two different sides of Biomusicology, which are biological and cultural components of music, in general the difference between Humanities/Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Biomusicology, as an interdisciplinary field, is derived from many different disciplines such as Biology, Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Cognitive Science, and Psychology. By the different approaches, the field of Biomusicology investigates the origins of music, musical universals and neurological human music-making process in all biological and cultural dimensions. In this way, Biomusicology attempts to negotiate biological and cultural approaches of music and find a solution for cultural/biological dichotomy in music studies (Cross 2001: 514). By doing this, Biomusicology also tries to fill the gap between Humanities/Social Sciences and Natural Sciences as an interdisciplinary field, which coins new paradigm for a future research.
